RollerBlog Sunday Surprise: The Anti-Meme
I’m not a big fan of memes. For those of you that aren’t familiar with the concept, memes are basically chain letters for bloggers. One blog links to a number of other blogs, and then they are supposed to in turn link to other blogs, and so on and so forth.
This week I was tagged in a quasi-meme by Turnip of Power in a response to a meme originated by Sam Freedom’s Blog. (Correction: Turnip tells me that the originator of this particular meme is ChainDrop.com - Sam’s meme is a similar but unrelated one. Mass meme confusion!)
Granted, Turnip isn’t a fan of memes either, and eloquently sums up why they are so annoying:
First of all you have the obligation to the person that just praised you and included your site, providing you with the ever beloved back-link. Then you have to link back to the originator of the list. Finally you have to link to 8 more people to pass the Meme on. A pyramid scheme preying on the politeness of others to return a favor.
Rather than perpetuating the meme, Turnip took the opportunity to just link to some favorite blogs. An inspired idea. And I’m doing the same…. but with a 70s twist. This is a seventies blog after all.
I’ve taken the liberty of “seventy-izing” 8 of my favorite blogs for your edification. All of the blogs listed below are worth checking out and have the RollerBlog stamp of approval.
(Please note: this is not intended to be a “meme”. This is simply a collection of some of my favorite blogs. The blogs named below are under no obligation to link back to me, or to listen to Saturday Night Fever. Really.)
Turnip of Power
The culprit behind this quasi-meme.
Also an interesting blog on technology, Internet marketing, and all things Entrecard.

Sweet!! Just when I thought my “Jimmy Corduroy Kung-Fu Detective” logo couldn’t get any more 70’s…

That’s pretty bad ass right there. All it takes is a disco ball to add 15-20 years to my rocket!

I never knew afros were so popular! Thanks for linking. I wanted to clear something. The meme I was responding to was from chaindrop.com. I linked to Sam Freedom because he had the first one that later raised much controversey in the forums when someone didn’t link to it. I also used his picture in a cratoon on that post, so owed him one for that. 4 of those favorites are already in my favorites, I’ll have to check out the rest.

John Oates would make a kick ass Woman Woman and apple of Lyle Waggoner’s eye. Thanks for the awesome Oates makeover and shout out!

Gorilla Sushi - Your original picture already rocks that seventies mojo so it was actually the most difficult one for me to “improve” - how do you improve perfection?
Atomic Andy - Enjoy!

Turnip - Thanks for the clarification. I’m still somewhat new to Entrecard so I must have missed the controversy that took place in the forums. There seems to be multiple memes going around so I’m not sure which one is the original (for the obligatory back link)??? Not that it really matters as this post is not intended to be a meme but just me having fun with some of my favorite blogs.
And I’m not sure that afros were that popular … but adding them seemed to be one of the easiest ways to “seventy-ize” some of my favorite cards

Herb - John Oates does make a pretty bad ass Wonder Woman, doesn’t he! I just couldn’t resist…

OMG, that is hilarious. I mean the 70-izing of the blog logos.

That’s awesome.
Will be seeing 70s-izing services in the Entrecard shop soon?
January 28th, 2008 at 7:30 am

Hey Rollerkaty, thems be some great picks! I like this place… see how good memes can be?
I gotta stick up for them, though, theys not be chain letters, nor even close. In FORM, perhaps they appear to be, in substance, they’re an incredible way for people to get to know more cool people… people you appreciate or admire and why.
All the linking is really secondary but it’s just a way of sharing a little search engine type “love” in the process.
Chain letters are basically just exact copies that threaten doom if you don’t do them properly… well, I guess MY memes would qualify then.
The doom threat is implied, lol.
Anyways, you did a fine job, have a really cool blog and I’ll bet, by now, some new friends… or at least should after those you tagged mention you to their readers.
Pleasure to meet ya,
Sam
