Have You Seen Juno Yet?
What do The Stooges, Patti Smith, and The Runaways all have in common? Bands from the seventies - check. Kick-ass rock groups that were influential in the development of the punk genre - check. The favorite bands of Juno MacGuff - check.
And just who is Juno MacGuff? Juno is the quirky, knocked-up, teen-aged heroine of MY NEW FAVORITE MOVIE of the same name. And, according to Juno MacGuff, 1977 was “the best time for rock and roll.” So, naturally, she has found a place in my seventies-loving heart.

Starring Ellen Page as Juno and Michael Cera as her friend Bleeker (and the father of her child), Juno is witty, funny, and touching. I’ve seen it in the theater twice, I own the soundtrack, and I still just can’t get enough of this movie.
Some memorable quotes from the movie, just to whet your movie-lovin’ appetite:
—–
Conversation between Bleeker and fellow runner, Vijay, as they run around the high school track:
Vijay: Hey Man.
Bleeker: Oh, hey Vijay.
Vijay: Did you hear Juno MacGuff is pregnant?
Bleeker: Yup.
Vijay: Did you hear it’s yours?
Bleeker: Yup.
…Vijay: You should grow a mustache. You’re a real man now.
Bleeker: I can’t grow a mustache. It never comes in evenly.
Vijay: Me neither. But I’m going to stop wearing underpants in order to raise my sperm count. See you.
—–
Juno, on the origins of her name:
Juno: My dad went through this phase where he was obsessed with Greek and Roman mythology. He named me after Zeus’s wife. I mean, Zeus had other lays, but I’m pretty sure Juno was his only wife. She was supposed to be really beautiful but really mean. Like Diana Ross.
—–
Juno, shouting to her Dad on the other side of the house as her water breaks:
Juno: Dad!
Mac: What!
Juno: Either I just pissed my pants or…
Mac: Or…
Juno: Thundercats are Go!
—–
So - have you seen Juno yet? If not, RUN, don’t walk, to the nearest theater. Grab yourself some popcorn, Swedish fish, and junior mints. If you’re feeling really cheeky sneak some beers into your coat pocket. And get ready to enjoy a great movie.

Wow, Stooges was Iggy Pop’s old band, Runaways was Joan Jett’s, and Patti Smith is the chick who refused to shave her underarms. (If you have the album, you know what I mean) Luckily, her music is so good I still listen to it. Raw emotion is how I would describe her voice.

I have the soundtrack for Juno but none of those bands are actually on it. I’ll definitely have to round up some Stooges, Runaways, and Patti for future listening and blog about them at greater length another time.

Thanks for stopping by my blog the other day!
I do want to see Juno…. can’t wait! I’m afraid I’ll have to wait for it to come out on DVD though.

Great movie. I just saw it last weekend. The only thing missing from the soundtrack was The Clash.

I loved the movie and have already seen it three times ;D I loved the quirky soundtrack. It fit perfectly.
My favorite line came from Juno’s father -
“I’m gonna punch that Bleeker kid in the weaner the next time I see him”

@ Wilson - hi and welcome.
@ Herb - for a movie that mentioned so many punk rock bands the soundtrack was surprisingly free of punk music. i liked the soundtrack in its own quirky way - but the Clash definitely would have been an interesting addition.
@ Turnip - enjoy!
@ Mike - three times! ok you have me beat.

rollerkaty, if you need some Patti Smith, I can share. I have no Stooges or Runaways on CD, though. But Patti was key in expanding beyond my love of straight pop as a teen. She still rocks.
