Nixon Now
I don’t typically stray into the world of politics in this blog, but a 1972 advertisement for Nixon’s re-election campaign caught my eye today. Complete with images of Nixon shaking hands, butterflies, Nixon smiling, people hugging, and a catchy theme song, the ad is an interesting look into seventies culture and politics.
What do you think about this ad?

I was 6 years old in 1972,and my mom was a firm supporter of McGovern.I remember her dragging me to rallies and we even picked up a 7″ vinyl single of “The McGovern Song”.I think it was sung by someone kind of famous back in the day,but I haven’t found any info on it online.
I think I still have that single somewhere.

Nixon is a goofy looking dude.
And where’s Bebe Rebozzo? You think more than anybody else, he’d be singing “Nixon Now” (which is, incidentally, going to be stuck in my head for eternity, thank you very much).

I actually remember this ad! And I remember when he came to my hometown (Lancaster, PA) and everyone went batsh**. I did NOT like the guy and was vocal about it to my very Republican father. He got mad at me and we decided it was best not to discuss politics EVER! LOL. Thanks for the trip through the past.

Wow. That’s pretty much the polar opposite of the LBJ attack ad on Goldwater that ran in 1964 (nuclear explosion behind the little girl).
Actually, I wouldn’t mind seeing more ads like that with today’s campaign.

reggie - we’ll definitely need to dig up that record, it must be in the garage somewhere. I can’t find a copy of it online. We must share the McGovern song with the world!
wngl - Nixon Now has totally been stuck in my head for the past day. This song is just too damn catchy.
nat - family + politics = not a good mix. its a subject i definitely avoid with my family
cromely - butterflies, flowers, and hugging people. today’s campaign ads are definitely lacking in all three important areas.

Haha! That is truly awesome.
It’s clear who his campaign was targeting with this ad: the crazy, happy, peace-loving, nixon-hating young’uns. With good reason, too, as it was just a year previous, in ‘71, when the 26th amendment lowered the voting age to 18.
