Wonder Woman: The Comic
Ever since beginning the RollerBlog about a year ago, one of my biggest sources of inspiration (not counting RollerReggie, of course) has been Wonder Woman. I am a fan of the 1976 television series starring Lynda Carter, and have been making my way through the season one boxed set. I’ve always known that the television series was based on a comic book, of course, but have never had the occasion to read one.
Well today I remedied that. While at the West Seattle Summer Fest today, we picked up a handful of old comic books for only a quarter each and I am now the proud owner of the Wonder Woman comic Amazons (1988, Annual 1). I spent quite a while pawing through boxes of Spiderman, Superman, Fantastic Four and Justice League comics (not to mention Aquaman, Green Lantern, Wonder Man, Star Trek, Aliens, and even some Archie comics) but all of the other Wonder Woman comics were apparently sold out. So I had to content myself with just one Wonder Woman comic… for now.
Amazons follows the adventures of Wonder Woman on her home world of Themyscira. She brings Julia and Nessie with her (characters that I am not familiar with, but I suppose I’ll have to read some of the previous comics in the series) who are regaled with various stories about the world of the Amazons.
The stories were fun to read, but one of my favorite parts about the comic are the advertisements. Being as the comic book is from 1988, the advertisements were very much from the period. One music ad that I particularly noticed advertised “12 HOT hits for a COOL penny” for anyone willing to join a particular record & tape club. Hot hits such as “Skyscraper” by David Lee Roth, “Bad” by Michael Jackson, “Kick” by INXS, “Tunnel of Love” by Bruce Springsteen, “Permanent Vacation” by Aerosmith, and “Faith” by George Michael. Ahhh… good times.
