Five Steps to Tom Jones Enlightenedness

July 27, 2007 By: User Imagerollerkaty (Who am I?) Category: Tom Jones 2 Comments →

I admit it. I am a big Tom Jones fan. By “big” I don’t mean that I have all of his albums or that I have sexy Tom Jones posters plastered all over my bedroom or anything (somehow I don’t think my husband would go for that). The only album I own is the Tom Jones Collector’s Edition, and I haven’t even seen him in concert. But what can I say, Tom Jones is the man.

Tom Jones’ career spans multiple decades, from the sixties up to the present, so I’m fudging a little bit here as many of my favorite songs aren’t *exactly* in the seventies. But, when I think of pictures of Tom with his curly hair, in-your-face chest hair, tight pants, and pouty expression - he certainly has that seventies look going. I like to think that he has a seventies soul.

I first became obsessed with Tom Jones after I watched the movie Mars Attacks. At the end of the movie when the planet barely escapes being wiped out by decidedly unfriendly martians, a group of refugees from Las Vegas (including Tom Jones, naturally) escape to a verdant forest untouched by the destruction. As a sign of the rebirth and renewal to come, birds fly to Tom Jones and perch on his outstretched arms as he begins to sing. Every time we watch Mars Attacks, that scene never fails to have me in hysterics.

If you have a Tom Jones-shaped void in your life, might I suggest the following:

  1. Go to the Tom Jones web site and download a Tom Jones background picture for your computer. Be sure to check out the Tomography which outlines the stages of Tom’s brilliant career while you are there.
  2. Check out the Church of Tom Jones web site. Now you know what a true fan really looks like.
  3. Consider joining a Tom Jones fan club, or starting your own. The following links will get you started: Tom Terrific Fan Club, Tom Jones Fan Clubs, Tom Jones Scandinavian Fan Club, Tom Jones Fan Club.
  4. View some vintage footage of Tom Jones: Tom Jones ripping up the dance floor, Tom Jones singing She’s a Lady, Tom Jones singing What’s New Pussycat?. Even better yet, go to a Tom Jones concert.
  5. Listen to Tom Jones music! My favorite songs include: It’s Not Unusual, She’s a Lady, I Ain’t No One Night Love Maker, Daughter of Darkness.

Now you are truly equipped to be a to be a Tom Jones SuperFan. Go forth and conquer, my friend.
