Vinyl Friday: Marcel Marceau

June 18, 2009 By: rollerkaty (Who am I?) Category: 1971, Mimes, Vinyl Friday 6 Comments →

Alas, I don’t actually own this album, but it is at the top of the list: The Best of Marcel Marceao.  Apparently both sides of the album have 19 minutes of silence, followed by a minute of applause.

Genius!

I’m not sure why Marcel Marceau’s name is spelled incorrectly on the album cover - does anyone know?

Bring On the Eighties Photos

June 04, 2008 By: User Imagerollerkaty (Who am I?) Category: 80s Photos, Mimes, The RollerBlog 3 Comments →

The RollerBlog Eighties Photo Contest is underway and I am delighted to share the great entries we have received so far.

Unfortunately, we have only received two entries. So, alas, this will be a short blog post.

On the bright side, if you have not yet entered the contest, the odds are certainly in your favor. Now is the time to embrace your eighties self and share your 1980s photos with the world. 1500 Entrecard credits or a Star Wars car air freshener (mystery aroma) are in store for the lucky winner - and that lucky winner could be YOU!

Contest Entries

This first picture is from my cousin Wolfgang, taken during the late 1980s. Note the fanny pack, the backwards baseball hat, the sunglasses at night, AND the t-shirt with a wolf (did I mention that his name is Wolfgang)? Truly an eightiespirational photo.

This second picture comes to you courtesy of Debra from http://www.mamaflosatx.com. This picture is of her kids from the 1980s. Cute!

For good measure, Debra also submitted a picture of herself circa 1965. So, not exactly from the 1980s, but still a great photo.

For more eightiespiration, I submit to you the following photo from a Sony TV brochure from 1981. Not only does the brochure feature a mime, but the mime just happens to be a friend of ours. Alas, he no longer practices mimery, but his work lives on through the magic of our new digital scanner and the Internets.

Mime is not a Crime

February 13, 2008 By: User Imagerollerkaty (Who am I?) Category: Mimes 8 Comments →

Mr. RollerBlog suggested that I do a blog post on mimes today. He has a weird fascination with mimes. This may have something to do with the fact that his co-worker (hereafter known as “Mr. Mime”) was actually a mime back in the day. Or maybe Mr. RollerBlog is simply a closeted mime. Which, you know, is fine with me. Go for it honey - reach for the sky!

For Christmas, Mr. RollerBlog found the perfect Christmas gift for Mr. Mime - the Avenging Unicorn Play Set from Archie McPhee. The avenging unicorn is a must - because “everyone wants an imaginary unicorn friend that they can call forth to smite their enemies.” It comes with a smite-able new age lady, businessman, and a mime… not to mention four interchangeable horns with different magical powers.

But, I digress. The seventies were a good time for mimes. From the husband-and-wife duo Shields and Yarnell to the Swiss pantomime troupe Mummenschanz, mimes seemed to be all over the place during the decade. And, because you really can’t have too much mimery, I leave you with the following Shields and Yarnell video:

See? That wasn’t too bad. Contrary to popular belief, mimes aren’t really scary after all. They are just…. misunderstood.
