Many happy returns to David Bowie, one of my favorite artists.

Our recent viewing of The Dark Crystal inspired The RollerBlog family to view another classic Jim Henson film. Labyrinth (1986) stars Jennifer Connelly as Sarah, a headstrong teenager who goes on a quest to save her baby brother from the clutches of the Goblin King (played by David Bowie).

I remember watching this movie as a child and finding the Goblin King a very scary character.  Now that I am an adult and a big David Bowie fan, I can’t help but come to the same conclusion.  The Goblin King is pretty darn scary.  Maybe it is the big hair or the freaky make-up or the tight spandex pants or the pirate shirts.  Or perhaps a combination of all of the above.

There. I’ve said it.

I’ve been meaning to write a post about David Bowie for a while now, but where to even start? His turn as the alien being Ziggy Stardust? His R&B Young Americans phase? His prolific acting career in films such as The Man Who Fell to Earth (1976), The Hunger (1983), Labyrinth (1986) … and Zoolander (2001)? His glam rockery?

David Bowie turned 61 a few days ago on January 8th, so now is as good of a time as any for me to come out of the closet as the unabashed Bowie fan that I am.

Happy birthday, David. May you have many happy returns.
